YDrip

Description

YDrip is an open-source smart water meter that tracks water usage by detecting the rotation of a magnet inside your existing mechanical meter. When powered via USB, it provides real-time updates, while on battery, data is sent periodically to extend battery life. However, leak alerts are always sent immediately to ensure quick detection.

Start Monitoring in 3 Simple Steps

Check Compatibility

To check if your meter is compatible, hold a compass (or compass app) near the top of the brass housing and turn your water supply on and off. If the compass needle moves, your meter likely contains the necessary magnet YDrip uses to measure water flow.

Installation

YDrip easily secures around your existing water meter using reusable zip ties—no plumber required.

Calibration

Calibrate YDrip using the ESPHome web interface by running water and following the on-screen instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The current version of YDrip is meant for home automation enthusiasts that are comfortable running and setting up Home Assistant. A basic understanding of flashing ESP32 based devices is required. Future software versions will support cloud storage and easy setup for non-technical users.

The YDrip water meter uses advanced sensors to measure water flow from your homes existing mechanical brass water meter. It connects to your existing water meter non-invasively and provides real-time leak detection and more.

Yes, when powered via USB. On battery, usage is recorded in real-time but sent periodically to conserve power. Leak alerts are always real-time. More frequent updates are possible at the cost of battery life.

We are currently conducting accuracy tests and will update the website with results. YDrip is not intended to replace your city water meter and should not be used where absolute accuracy is required.

YDrip’s software is still in development, but you can expect a few months of battery life.

YDrip has been tested with 5/8" meters (shown below) and should be compatible with most mechanical brass meters. It measures the rotation of a metal wheel inside the meter, corresponding to water flow.

YDrip Compatible Water Meter

The YDrip enclosure is IP68-rated, meaning it is dustproof and water-resistant, but not designed for full submersion, especially for extended periods. However, long-term outdoor performance has not been extensively tested, and condensation inside the case may pose a risk to the electronics.
